What is a Load Cell and How Does it Work? 

All digital scales use load cells to measure an object’s weight. Electrical current runs through load cells and when a load, or force, is applied to the scale, the load cells will bend or compress slightly. This changes the electrical current in the load cell. A weight indicator measures the electrical current change and displays it as a digital weight value.

Single Point

A single point load cell is designed for lighter-capacity equipment. These load cells are commonly constructed of aluminum or stainless steel. 

Capacity range: 1 to 1,000 kilograms. 

Double-Ended Shear Beam

A double-ended beam load cell is secured at both ends with the load applied to the center. Construction varies depending on the application. 

Capacity range: 1,000 to 200,000 pounds. 

Single-Ended Shear Beam

A single-ended beam load cell is secured at one end with the load applied to the opposite end. Construction varies depending on the application. 

Capacity range: 250 to 20,000 pounds

S-Beam

An S-beam load cell, or S-shaped load cell, is most commonly used to suspend a weighing vessel with tension applied through stretching. 

Capacity range: 25 to 20,000 pounds. 

Canister

A canister load cell is cylindrical in shape, with force applied vertically in tension or compression. These are ideal for heavy-capacity applications. 

Capacity range: 20,000 to 500,000 pounds. 

What is a Weigh Module?

Weigh module kits are integrated weighing systems that include load cells, load cell cables, load cell mounts and a junction box. The wide variety of weigh modules we offer may leave you wondering what the differences are between certain models and, most importantly, which modules are best suited for your needs. We’ve broken down our weigh module selection into three application categories. Most operations can be classified into one of these: 

Suspended Weighing

Available in mild or stainless steel, suspended weigh modules support load cells that are hung vertically and measure tension in applications such as suspended hoppers. 

Vessel Weighing

Available in either stainless or painted milk steel, we carry a variety of models and configurations for weighing vessels, tanks, and other fixed containers. 

Truck Scale Weighing

Rice Lake’s stainless-steel weigh modules are designed to withstand challenging environments and handle heavy-capacity applications, including vehicle weighing. Reliably weigh large shipments with a solution that lasts for years.
